18. Quilting Fabric 101

On this episode of the podcast, we’re diving into Quilting Fabric 101.

Fabric Terminology

Yardage

Typically means fabric off the bolt or sold by the yard.

Fat Quarter

A quarter yard cut the “fat way”.

Fat Eighth

One eighth of a yard cut the “fat way”

Layer Cakes

Collection of 10″x10″ squares

Charm Packs

Collection of 5″x5″ squares

Jelly Rolls

Collection of 2.5″ strips cut by the WOF

Selvedge

The white strip running the length of your fabric.  Includes fabric collection and color key.

Fold

The crease created when you fold your fabric selvedge to selvedge.

Grain

The grain runs parallel and perpendicular to the selvedge.

Bias

Typically refers to a cut made at a 45 degree angle to the selvedge

WOF

Width of Fabric.  Typically between 40-45″. Home Decor Fabric is usually 54″.  Wide width fabric typically measures 108″

Length

The amount of selvedge you have.  So if you order a yard off a bolt, the length is 1 yard.

Right and Wrong Side

Printing and pattern is on the right side.

Scale

The size and density of the pattern on any given fabric.

Types of Fabric

Blender

Think monochromatic, marbled, or tone on tone patterns.

Batik

Special dye technique utilizing wax resistance methods.

Traditional

Muted colors.  Based on civil war quilts.  There are so many civil war replica fabrics out there and they are GORGEOUS.  Check it out, seriously.
